Professor Tone M Norekval is a Professor in Cardiovascular Nursing at the Department of Clinical Science, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Bergen, and Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway. She is the director of the Centre on Patient-reported Outcomes in Bergen, and in her position she leads national initiatives in Patient-Centred Outcomes. She is particularly involved in the national medical quality registries. She chairs a Research Programme on Health Research at Haukeland University Hospital, and is also the chair of the Patient-Reported Outcomes in Cardiology (PROCARD) research group.

With patient-reported outcomes as an interest for many years her research concerns patient-reported and clinical outcomes in patients with arrhythmias, coronary artery disease and aortic stenosis.

Professor Norekval graduated as a registered nurse in 1992, and has worked with cardiac patients since then – in primary care albeit mainly at the tertiary university hospital, and her role has included clinical, management and research positions. She received her Master degree from the University of Bergen in 1998 and doctoral degree on patient-reported outcomes in women with heart disease in 2009.

Her professional activities spread widely both nationally and internationally. She is the Past President of the Norwegian National Society of Cardiovascular Nursing, and currently chairs the Research Network on Cardiovascular Nursing in Norway. She initiated the national specialisation education in cardiovascular nursing in Norway, and now chairs the only national Masters programme in cardiovascular nursing in the country. She is the Past President of the Council on Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied professions in the European Society of Cardiology (ESC), and has been involved in committees of the Nursing Council of the American Heart Association (AHA). Her professional activities also include participation in ESC guidelines, and on the editorial Board of the European Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing.
