Postdoctoral Research Fellow, NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence (CRE) to Reduce Inequality in Heart Disease


Dr Lei Chen is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow supervised by Professor Simon Stewart in the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence to Reduce Inequality in Heart Disease at the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research. Lei obtained her medical degree with comprehensive clinical training and worked as an Endocrinologist for 6 years in China before she came to Australia in 2005. She completed her PhD in Epidemiology under the supervision of Professor Andrew Tonkin and Associate Professor Jonathan Shaw from the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, Monash University in 2011. Her PhD thesis provides two validated tools for predicting risk of fatal cardiovascular events and of incident type 2 diabetes in the general Australian population. After she completed her PhD degree, Lei worked as an Epidemiologist on diabetes research at Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute. She has over 15 years of experience in epidemiological and clinical studies in obesity, diabetes and co-morbidities both here and in China. Lei has good command of statistical analysis using STATA and SPSS, particularly in the area of risk assessment of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
