Professor Karen Sliwa joins The MacKillop


ACU is honoured to announce the appointment of Professor Karen Sliwa as Visiting Professor at the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research (MMIHR).

Internationally-recognised Professor Sliwa joins the Institute with a wealth of experience and expertise in the area of cardiovascular disease and research, particularly in pregnancy and postpartum, where she has been extensively involved in creating worldwide awareness of Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM).Professor Sliwa is the Director of the Hatter Institute for Cardiovascular Research in Africa, University of Cape Town, and Director of the Soweto Cardiovascular Research Unit, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. Earlier this year, she was elected into the prestigious role of President-Elect by the World Heart Foundation, marking the Foundation’s first female president and first representative from the African continent.

Professor Sliwa’s role as Visiting Professor at MMIHR will see her partner with the Institute for three years, where she will continue to serve as Chief Investigator for the NHMRC Centre of Research Excellence to Reduce Inequality in Heart Disease, and provide senior leadership and mentorship to all members of MMIHR.
