New clinic to beat diabetes and heart disease
The Centre for Primary Care and Prevention has recently launched a clinic in Colac as part of the MODERN (Management to Optimise Diabetes and Metabolic Syndrome Risk Reduction via Nurse-led Management) Study. The clinic was officially launched by renowned endocrinologist Emeritus Professor Paul Zimmet, State MP Terry Mulder, Councillor Frank Buchanan, Mayor of Colac, and Professor Simon Stewart, Director of the MacKillop, on 7th July.
Led by Associate Professor Melinda Carrington, The MODERN program will work with the local community to reduce their chances of developing diabetes and heart disease.
Associate Professor Carrington said the clinic will respond to a key societal need.
“Approximately 1 million Australians are diagnosed with diabetes each year, which is a key factor for developing heart disease, the leading cause of death in Australia. Many Australians are on the cusp of developing diabetes and don’t know it,
“MODERN will develop a regional health care program that reduces the risk of developing diabetes or heart disease (such as a heart attack or stroke) by identifying and managing the risk factors that cause these diseases,” said Associate Professor Carrington.
“People can have many risk factors, but when a combination group together at the same time, including high blood pressure, obesity, high blood sugar and lipids (cholesterol and triglyceride), it forms what is called the ‘metabolic syndrome’, and greatly exposes individuals to the development of diabetes and heart disease,” she said.
Associate Professor Carrington went on to say “MODERN has the potential to service many undiagnosed potentially ‘at-risk’ individuals living in and around Colac.
“It will fulfil an important social and clinical need for dedicated services for those Australians at risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.”
The clinic is funded by a $1.3 million National Health and Medical Research Council grant and is a partnership between the Mary MacKillop Institute for Health Research, the University of Melbourne and the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute.
MODERN is located at Suite 2, 6 Murray Street, Colac, Victoria. For appointments, please call 03 5233 9400.
